With
the demands on CIO's and CFO's as the economy struggles to recover, the
world of Telephony is taking on a dramatic resurgence as well. A lot
of the Competitive companies with bad business plans and over aggression
in building out their networks, have either gone into bankruptcy or just
recently come out of it.
SBC has changed the terrain with the introduction of their Long
Distance product, albeit, a tad late in that area. Rates have
dropped to historical lows and the margins obviously, lower. But it is a
necessary piece to their "bundling" strategy. Even now
Municipalities are bracing for inevitable further State cuts in funding,
Corporations are multi tasking their employees beyond their skill sets and
School Districts are in budget crisis's almost annually.
Your Telephony should be addressed outside it's own structure in order
to better understand the opportunities to reduce unnecessary expenses and
plan for future Telecom to meet the demands on new technology. We
often protect that of which we serve, and how we put together out networks
is a prime example of that. We don't challenge what was put
together, only explore it's potential. So what do you do??
1. Consider the Benefits of leasing/financing new equipment
versus the cash outlay. With technology so static in it's change,
equipment has no resale value within a few years now and the maintenance
expense to service old equipment has become astronomical
2. Curtail Employee Telephone abuse that is needlessly draining
your budget.
3. Work with your consultant to develop a "real"
Telecom budget instead of using historical numbers to do so.
4. Work with your consultant to do a thorough RFP of your
Telephony. Only then can you understand it's real potential for
savings and maximum efficiency. Calling around every week is no way
to care for a network
5. And finally, work with a consultant that doesn't
"sell" you an application that they are paid on! These
contracts and products come typically with restrictive terms that make it
impossible to move to the next level of an ever changing telephony world!
