Customer Testimonial:
"
Even though we are a smallish firm, Total Solutions Group treated us like their larger clients, including hanging in for 3 months with our carrier until they honored a price quote they wanted to void."

Telephony Forecast for 2005

VoIP
Voice-over-IP technology will continue its rapid ascent   toward eventual domination of the still reigning killer app of the telecom sector--voice service. Look for even more VoIP entrants, plummeting prices for consumers and a continuing struggle for differentiation among service providers. Expect security and reliability to become increasingly important, particularly in the enterprise, and for enhancements like wireless to become more desirable and available to all customer segments.

Broadband
This is the market that continues to grow considerably.  Broadband market share will be critical as more intelligence is added to the pipe in terms of packaging content delivery.  This is the platform in which the provider will sell other services to enhance their revenue streams

FTTP and Video
Watch as long-awaited fiber network extensions finally come to fruition, making telecom service providers viable competitors in the video services sector. Developments to watch include differences over networking format for telco video (IP vs. RF), the ongoing debate over whether the acronym should end in premises, curb or home, and the inevitable response of the cable operators. (Will that include a wireless play? See next entry.) Also keep a close eye on independent telcos in smaller markets as they make strides in the video market--some without fiber to anything.

MVNOs
Another highly anticipated development, this one in the wireless services sector, will enjoy prominence in 2005. Enablers of mobile virtual network operators theoretically allow just about any brand with some consumer visibility and the money to spend to break into the wireless racket. That includes cable operators, many of which need wireless lines of defense as telcos invade their video turf. Also watch for increasingly targeted and customized wireless services aimed at specific demographic and regional markets.

Wireless Consolidation
Driven in part by the aforementioned MVNO trend that's making the wireless market an increasingly crowded place, the big-iron operators of wireless networks are already starting to join forces. Watch for the ongoing commoditization of mobile voice applications, making enhanced applications and services increasingly important to service distinction and revenue generation. Also expect the resulting U.S. mobile behemoths--which may be down to four by early 2005, if the Sprint/Nextel combo proceeds as planned--to make luring network-less MVNO hopefuls to their extensive network facilities a major strategic component.

WiMAX
Will 2005 finally be the breakout year that proponents of broadband wireless have been hoping for? Probably not, but if standardization plays out as planned and the big names and monetary support behind WiMAX continues, look for this networking format to prove itself in the next five years as a viable broadband contender for certain configurations--both in North America and worldwide.

Regulatory Uncertainty
Underlying, driving--and potentially threatening--all of the above is the very real possibility of a re-re-write of the regulations governing telecom competition. Will another interpretation of the rules help or hurt the broadband economy?

Telecom versus Cable
While this is in the early stages, opportunities for bundled services will be offered throughout the year. The intensity of the competition will center primarily on how much success cable firms have selling phone service, via voice over internet protocol (VOIP).

Nextel In Deal With Yahoo For Mobile Internet Service
Nextel Communications Inc. (NXTL) plans to offer Yahoo Inc.'s (YHOO) mobile internet services on Nextel handheld devices.

The announcement follows rumors on Wall Street that Verizon Communications (VZ) could possibly bid for Sprint Corp. (FON), which would halt Sprint's tentative $35 million merger with Nextel. Sprint and Nextel are expected to announce the deal Wednesday.

In a press release Tuesday, Nextel said Yahoo will provide a suite of products and services including e-mail, instant messaging, games and news content for Nextel's handheld devices.

Nextel, which had 2003 revenue of $10.8 billion, currently provides wireless services, which include walkie-talkie service, instant messaging and online service.

AT&T in Talks With Sprint

AT&T is expected to announce that it will begin using Sprint's wireless network to sell mobile phone services under the AT&T Wireless brand, The New York Times reports.

AT&T cannot begin using the AT&T Wireless name, however, until it wins back the rights to use it from Cingular Wireless. The deal would solidify Sprint's status as a major reseller of telecom services.

Sprint-Nextel Merger Won't Result in Immediate Changes

The proposed Sprint-Nextel Communications merger will result in some big changes for both companies, but those changes won't come right away, the companies say.

After the deal is completed -- approval probably won't come for several months -- the companies must begin the cumbersome process of integrating their different technologies.

VoIP, Bluetooth Technology Vulnerable to Hacks

The widespread adoption of Bluetooth technology is creating opportunities for mischief or worse for a new generation of phone hackers.

As mobile phones come to resemble networked computers, or, in the case of VoIP, as computers are used as phones, they are increasingly vulnerable to the same sort of viral attacks that plague PC users online.

MCI Calls For Real De-Regulation For ILECS

After years of lobbying state commissions to regulate ILEC pricing of services, MCI called for "real deregulation" of all telecom carriers--including incumbents--in an open letter to state regulators at the National Association of Regulatory Utility Commissioners convention in Nashville, Tenn.

This is important for those clients who have offices serviced by Telco’s like Centurytel, Winn Telephone, Wolverine, AllTel, etc.

8 Million Take Advantage of Number Portability Facility

According to a Federal Communications Commission report about 8 million cell phone users have changed carriers as they are allowed to retain their old phone numbers. This facility of number portability was allowed about a year ago on November 23, 2003.

About 750,000 consumers have replaced their phones at homes and offices with cell phones. The number though has fallen short of the estimates, which had predicted that about 30 million consumers would switch carriers.

No carrier has revealed the exact number of the users who have switched services.
